In my opinion, ambience is better than music, since this way you can achieve the fact that even in the same room at different points you will hear your sound, which for a horror movie (and for building an atmosphere in general) is a much more advantageous option than a pre-recorded melody, which will sound at all levels in general (which is good only for combat scenes, IMHO).RiROBOT`s wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 4:19 pmWarning! Hello everyone! I am torn between two versions for musical background - in first variant, everything will be in the form of multi-minute music files that will sound at the entire level, and the second option will be short sound files that sound anywhere on the same level (ambience atmosphere)![]()
Please note that I have accumulated over 160 sound loops, and the music is much heavier than 1-5 seconds of a file, which can be shoved into a level of at least a hundred
What do you think is option to come to? The funny thing in this situation is that almost all the music is just these very samples, just put together...![]()
Music or Looped Ambience?

There is a grain of truth in your words, I do not deny it. But still, I think that a full-fledged musical composition is much more preferable than a non-musical excerpt... After all, Silent Hill is famous, first of all, for its beautiful musical atmosphere, and these guys, if they want to be equal to this franchise, respectively, should do the same as Konami (Silent Hill authors)!wonikert wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 12:45 pm In my opinion, ambience is better than music, since this way you can achieve the fact that even in the same room at different points you will hear your sound, which for a horror movie (and for building an atmosphere in general) is a much more advantageous option than a pre-recorded melody, which will sound at all levels in general (which is good only for combat scenes, IMHO).
Re: Music or Looped Ambience?
Oh yes, by the way, only now I realized that when the game uses ambient, not music, then the creator of the maps has three more work to do, because in addition to creating the level itself (drawing geometry, applying textures and placing entities), he also has to tinker with sound zones... And this, as you know, is not a matter of grateful. Therefore, I will finally cast my vote in favor of "Music Tracks"

Hmm... I'm a big fan of Doom 3, where, as you know, there is practically no music (except for menus and cutscenes), and therefore I lean towards the option of sound loops (yeah, more work with levels, but the sake of a good cause, nothing is sorry)
